Week #7      Sunday, March 19
Reading  March 12 - 18
1 Kings 5:1 – 2 Kings 10:36

The rise and fall of Solomon speaks to the fragile state of men and women when we take our eyes off the Lord and succumb to the desires of the world.  Solomon was given immensely more than any other person in history, yet I Kings 11:6 says, “So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done.”  And as their leader did, so did the Israelites.  These passages are a reminder that God is a promise keeper, that he continues to work out his plan of salvation as He continued the line of David, and that he keeps a righteous remnant as seen in the faithfulness of Elijah and Elisha.

And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds, you were healed. 1 Peter 2:24

Solomon’s downfall was attributed to the relationships he has with his unbelieving wives. (1 Kings 11:4)   What can we extract from Solomon's life in holding close relationships with those who don’t have faith in the Lord?

Evidence of wisdom is obedience to the word of God. (Matt 7:24) Solomon was entrusted with wisdom but later failed, Rehoboam asked for wisdom from Jeroboam and ignored it.  How are we to evaluate Godly counsel and what is our responsibility when receiving it?

Discouragement, depression, burnout and anxiety are real as seen in Elijah’s experience in the wilderness.  What is attributed to Elijah wanting his life to end and how are we to deal with discouragement in our lives and those around us?

The incarnation of Jesus Christ is the greatest example of humility.  Naaman, who was a great warrior, was outraged at Elijah’s direction on how he would need to humble himself in the process of being healed from his leprosy.  What is the importance of humbling ourselves before the Lord?

God is a jealous God who seeks our affection and our faithfulness.  Discuss how we are distracted from idols in our lives and how God, as opposed to idols, is so much more worthy of our worship.

Discuss what the Lord has shown you through your daily reading.

The goal of a small group is to make disciples.

Matthew 28:18-20
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

The best way to make disciples and be a disciple is by committing yourself to a small group of individuals who passionately seek Christ through a commitment to His Word, a commitment to the church body (not a building), and a commitment to personal sanctification through openness and vulnerability.  Small groups are designed to connect you to a community of believers on an intimate level that can’t be accomplished in a large congregational setting.

Small group discipleship is not easy, and it does not come without discipline.  As the group becomes more comfortable with one another and with the routine of meeting it will be easy to slip into more of a self-help mindset or a 12 step program that looks to gain Christian information and over spiritual transformation.  Please make a commitment to God, yourself, and your group to be disciplined in your effort to study God’s Word, to vulnerable and honest, and to be present on a regular basis.

It is our prayer that you grow in discipleship.
